We went to buy nail polish and ended up at Mardi Gras!!

Adventures

I had a very exciting and fun weekend. My best friend came to visit! I moved to another state last year, so we don’t see each other very much, but we do talk on the phone very frequently.

One day over the weekend we decided to check out a really cool store called Del Sol. They have cool nail polishes that change color in the sun. They also have T-shirts, hair accessories, flip flops, kids clothes and Men’s t-shirts that all change color in the sun. We checked to see where the nearest store was and it was about an hour and a half away. ( give or take a few minutes.)

So we had a fun little road trip and we finally got close to our destination. A lot of roads were blocked off and there were parking lots advertising parking for $20.00. Something must be going on. My first thought was carnival or food fest. So we drove around and found some parking.

When we were walking around, we saw a guy dressed as a pirate. Cool! A lot of people were wearing mardi gras beads and were dressed up in flashy, colorful clothing. As  we got closer to our destination, we realized the store in right in the middle of Mardi Gras! This day just got way more interesting!!

So we headed in the direction of Del Sol. There were people throwing beads off balconies and we caught some, there were food vendors and I noticed “Gator on a stick” was an option at more than one. There was music playing and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

We made it to Del Sol and they had all kinds of cool color changing stuff!  I bought 4 nail polishes at ” buy 3 get 1 free” and a color changing t-shirt for myself and one for my guy. They also had another store attached called Cariloha. Cariloha is clothing and bedding made of bamboo. Bamboo is softer than cotton and is more environmentally friendly. I bought 2 T-shirts and a pair of bamboo underwear ( which I have on now ). The color changing shirts are guaranteed for life and the only washing instructions are not to use bleach. All the Cariloha items are also lifetime guaranteed, you just can’t use liquid fabric softener. Obsessed!!!

After shopping, we started looking around. There was a live music tent playing metal that we didn’t go towards but could hear very well. They had a face painting tent, and my friend got feather false eyelashes, glittery eye makeup and gems on her face. It was very festive and adorable!! There were more food tents than I had ever seen and it smelled kind of like a carnival. There was a parade where the people on floats threw more beads and we caught more. The parade seemed to go around in a circle so we saw it more then once. I looked up and saw colorful beads hanging from trees in a really pretty way. There was a marching band playing jazz music. Little kids were so covered in beads, it was a wonder they could walk. My own neck felt like it had 5 pounds of necklaces on it.

We realized we had been gone for hours, so we had to leave to make it back for dinner with the rest of my family. The ride back seemed to take less time than the ride there. We were in great moods and had a wonderful day!! I had never been to Mardi Gras before, and I think I will definitely make a plan to go next year and spend the day there. If you ever get the chance to go, I highly, highly recommend it!!

Preparing for out of town guests/ No one likes a stinky house!

cleaning

There’s nothing more exciting than having out of town family or friends staying with you for a few days! It goes without saying that you want to clean your house, but did you know the first things most people notice is what your home smells like and clutter? If your house smells, most people won’t tell you, but they will tell everyone else!! I have a 3 day cleaning plan to ensure your guests are not uncomfortable, and you won’t be embarrassed. Depending on the size of your home and how much time you have, it could take longer or not as long.

Day 1- Remove dust and other allergens

Take books off shelves and dust, pay close attention to picture frames and any corners of the house. Check your staircase and dust between spindals and any shelving.  Vacuum mattresses of guest beds and wash the bedding. Vacuum furniture. Did you know that lavender oil is a natural disinfectant? Mix a few drops in a spray bottle with water and spray mattresses, the couch, anything fabric that can’t be washed.

Day2- Address any clutter and clean bathrooms and floors

Now is the time to remove any clutter. Kids toys, pet toys, books and magazines, ect. Find a place to keep your things or throw away anything you don’t have a place for. This is when I like to make sure my bathrooms are spotless and I wash my floors and any area rugs or bathmats. Go outside and come back in. What does your home smell like? You can remove tough odors with vinegar. It’s a strong smell, but once the vinegar smell dissipates, so does the bad smell. ( this is why I do it at least a day before my guests arrive) I also take out the garbages and wash the inside of my garbage cans. Address any pet odors, wash dog or cat beds. Give the dog a bath. Change any air fresheners.

Day3- Kitchen, laundry, vacuum and touch ups

On day 3 I wash all towels. I clean my kitchen last because it gets used so much. Last night’s dinner may have left some stains on your stovetop, floor or kitchen cabinets. No one likes strong odors of last night’s dinner!! I vacuum all carpeted areas and furniture again. I check bathrooms for marks on mirrors or any toilet bowl cleaning that may be needed. Make sure your guests have access to clean towels, extra blankets, sunscreen and bug spray as needed and I think it is a nice touch to provide soap and shampoo and conditioner in the guest bathroom in case they forgot them. I also have disposable razors and new toothbrushes in the cabinet.

I hope you find this helpful

Am I enough yet?

Self esteem

No matter what i do, or what I’m good at, I feel like I am never enough. I know that I’m being judged constantly by other women. Everything I didn’t do well, buying instead of making snacks to bring to kid’s extra curricular activities, ect. We judge each other’s life decisions, deal with the idea we need to shed baby weight as quickly as possible, cook, shop, work and live all while being thin, friendly, happy and wrinkle free.  Do men feel this kind of pressure? doubt it.

When a man gets gray hair, it’s dignified and sexy. When a woman does, no so much. No one ever judges a guy on the size of his thighs. Their pants come with a waist and length measurement, a lot of women’s pants just have a number, a self esteem shattering number if it goes up( if you’re anything like me).

When a man is driven, determined and career focused he’s awarded. A woman with the same qualities is often called a bitch. If a guy sleeps with a bunch of women, his man friends don’t judge him and call him names. Can we say the same? Really?.

So what I’m wondering is why this crappy double standard still exists? It’s gotten much better. But I’m always trying to look younger, be thinner,be nicer, and feel very much a failure if it doesn’t go as planned. My guy is wonderful and always thinks I’m enough. But he has never felt the need to look hot in a cocktail dress, shed baby weight very quickly and pretend it wasn’t due to absolute obsessive exercising and dieting. He has never broken down in tears in dressing room due to his pants size. I have, many times.

One thing I have noticed is that women are mean to each other, really really mean. It doesn’t stop in high school, it extends to offices and daycare and the PTA. Women in their 30’s and 40’s and probably beyond still call each other sluts and whores, call each other bad mom’s, criticize their careers or lack of careers, spending habits, weight, what so and so wore to the grocery store, ect.

I wish as women we could be nicer to each other. If we treated each other as nice as men treat other men, I think we would all be happier.

Unsexy Beauty problem: Acne

Acne, Uncategorized

So a little background, I usually have clear skin. I get the occasional breakout, but usually just one or two. I woke up Saturday morning, after trying a sample moisturizer i received, with a ton of pimples!!! I had a bunch on my forehead, on my chin, my cheeks. Enough for my guy to say to me “Dude, what happened to your face?”  This is never what you want your guy to say first thing in the morning. I was horrified!!

So here is what I did to clear it up by Valentines day ( in 3 days). First I threw out that awful sample! Then I washed my face with  Biore’ charcoal cleanser. Charcoal is the hot anti-acne product right now cuz it gets the gunk out of your pores. Then I used Derma e anti-wrinkle vitamin A glycolic toner, because vitamin A keeps wrinkles and acne away!  ( Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A)  I used my usual serum which doesn’t particularly do anything for acne, but I love it-Paula’s Choice resist ultralight super antioxidant serum. I love love love Paula’s Choice products!! You can get them from dermstore.com. Then I used Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair moisturizer spf 30, because it has Retinol and vitamin C so it will get rid of the acne, keep wrinkles away, clear up the post acne marks and protect from the sun! Obsession!!  Usually, Retinol is only for night but this particular product is formulated for day and has sunscreen-a MUST if you use Retinol at all.

Then, after removing my makeup, I used Yes to Tomatoes clear skin acne detoxifying  charcoal mud mask. Then after washing that off, I used my favorite serum and Paula’s Choice resist intensive repair cream which has Retinol and is super moisturizing. I have done this everyday, no exceptions!!

I also wanted to combat my acne from the inside so I changed my diet. I cut out dairy completely because it can cause acne for some people. I drank 3 cups of green tea every day.I also made a drink with tumeric yesterday that I got from pintrest, it’s disgusting! I drank it anyway ,here is the recipe:

1 tsp. honey

12oz. water

2tbsp lemon juice

1/2tsp tumeric powder

Put it in a blender and drink it down if your desperate!

All I can say is, I woke up today with almost completely clear skin!! Valentine’s Day miracle.

The product that made a huge difference in my skin!

Skin care

I have been using Organic Himalayan Sea Buck-thorn Berry Oil for about 2 months now. I either add a drop to bottled water or add it to smoothies.  I always have chapped lips and dry skin in the winter, I drink tons of water, I moisturize and moisturize, use chapstick like i’m getting paid to, and usually by the end of the day, I’m chapped and dry. I am the palest person ever and when I have dry skin I look kinda of corpse-like. Not cute! Not cute at all!! I want to have some color to my face so I don’t look like I’m sick all the time.

Once I started using this, no more chapped lips and my skin doesn’t feel dry. I actually think this is the best my skin has ever looked. ( I still moisturize and use chapstick) I’m much more comfortable going out without makeup on. I even think It has speeded up my metabolism! It does not say anywhere that it does anything for weight loss, but  I find that I am less hungry and have been losing weight.

I was buying vitamins on Vitacost.com and I saw this. It wasn’t very expensive and lasts a long time if you just use 1 drop a day.  It says you can use it topically, but I have not tried that yet. You could also just drop it into your mouth, it doesn’t taste bad, kind of berry like.

I’m a believer!!  Check it out for yourself!!

Being a better me.2017 Resolutions!!

Uncategorized

Last year, one of my resolutions was to be a better listener. I have a very short attention span. I cannot multi-task to save my life!! I think it’s because I notice everything around me, kind of all at once. I remember what everyone I know was wearing the day I met them, I notice the way a room smells, I notice if there is music in the room and sometimes end up singing along in my head. So I have to focus completely on the sound of the person’s voice and what they are feeling. If i’m on the phone, I have to turn the tv or radio completely off and not page through magazines or do laundry while we talk.

This year,I want to try to tell people how much they mean to me. I am not a mushy person. I don’t cry at movies or at weddings. I get uncomfortable talking about my feelings. Of course I say “I love you” to a few select people, but I also usually am more comfortable with a sarcastic comment or joke. When my husband and I first started dating, he knew that if I said ” I hate you” it meant ” I really really love you.” I said it in a nice tone of voice with a big smile on my face.  We kind of pick on each other. Actually, I pick on everyone I like.

I also want to work on my general attitude. I tend to see the negative aspect of things and sometimes am in a very dark place in my head. Maybe if i focus on the positive aspect,I won’t always be saying ” Why does this kind of thing always happen to me?” I will try more things if I’m not sure that I will fail anyway so why bother. One of my favorite people in the whole world is the most positive, happy person I have ever met. She calls this “polyanna-ing”. Like the movie. This little girl gets crutches as a gift, she is happy because she doesn’t need to use them. I should try to find the bright side when things don’t go my way.

I hope that next year I will be a little bit better.

What are your resolutions?

The Playlist to my life

Uncategorized

Ever since I was little, I would spend hours in my room listening to the radio. I would make my own mix tapes by taping songs off the radio with a blank cassette tape. I would watch mtv in the morning before school, after school, any time i had the chance. In first grade my favorite band was Gun’s N Roses. My walls were covered with posters of Axl Rose and Slash.

In forth grade I was obsessed with Metallica. Enter Sandman was played on repeat while i did my homework and spent time drawing. Then, when I was in fifth grade, Nirvana caught my eye on mtv. I was obsessed! Kurt and Courtney were the coolest couple ever. While my friends had subscriptions to YM, Teen Magazine and the like, I was only interested in Rolling Stone.

I has my first kiss at the roller rink. Cum on feel the noise by Quiet Riot was playing. The roller rink didn’t exactly have the newest, coolest playlist.Every time I hear that song, I remember being completely ambushed by a thirteen year old boys tongue!

My first heartbreak was spent playing Fiona Apple and Bush in my room writing bad poetry. The first party I went to had Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground on the radio frequently. When I hear that song, I think of my friends from freshman year.

I would spend all my birthday money, babysitting money, saved up lunch money on cd’s and band t-shirts. David Bowie’s scary monsters album, Rage Against the Machine, Prodigy,Marilyn Manson, Korn,Cheap Trick, The Ramones,Beastie Boys, Sublime,Pantera,Slipknot,Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, Hole and many more were the soundtrack to High School. Whenever I hear Hole’s Celebrity Skin, I think of sitting in my high school best friend’s suburban after school. That song pops into my head every time I change my hair.

In 2006 my daughter was born. I was listening to My Chemical Romance, Coheed and Cambria, the Used, and Pennywise at the time. Sexy Back by Justin Timberlake was all over the radio. I would spend time on my Myspace playlist looking for new and exciting songs to add. When I met my current husband, he fixed my computer and I had left a My Chemical Romance cd in it.

In 2015, I got married by Elvis in Las Vegas. Fool’s Rush In by Elvis was playing while I walked down the isle.I listened to Arctic Monkeys, Etta James and Amy Winehouse while I got ready. It was the best day ever!!

I have Amazon music  and satellite radio now. I can download any song I want. I still have all the band t-shirts and the songs for my favorite memories. My taste in music is always changing and evolving. I have a playlist for everything, when I’m sad, when I’m mad, cleaning the house, and dancing it out. I have spent a lot of time making them. Some songs take me back, some push me forward. Current most played songs are: Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie, Blood in the cut by K.Flay, Tears dry on their own by Amy Winehouse,Celebrity Skin by Hole, The man who sold the world by David Bowie, Y Control by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Doses and Mimosas by Cherb.  But that’s just this week.

What’s your playlist?
